Suomen Tähtitieteilijäseuran toimintaperiaatteena on tähtitieteellisen tutkimustyön edistäminen Suomessa. Tähtitieteen opetus ja tutkimustyö on keskittynyt Helsingin, Oulun ja Turun yliopistojen yhteyteen ja tähtitieteen tutkimuslaitoksiin, kuten Tuorlan observatorio (Turun yliopisto) ja Metsähovin radio-observatorio (Aalto-yliopisto). Seura on perustettu vuonna 1969, ja sen jäseninä on noin sata alan tutkijaa ja opiskelijaa.

Yhdistys järjestää tieteellisiä kokouksia ja neuvotteluja. Se pitää yhteyttä ulkomaisiin tähtitieteilijöihin ja alan kansainvälisiin järjestöihin, esimerkiksi maksamalla Suomen jäsenyyden Astronomy & Astrophysics -julkaisusarjassa. Yhteyttä pidetään myös Suomen valtiovallan edustajiin ja muihin tahoihin (esim. Suomen Akatemia), jotka voivat edistää tähtitieteen tutkimustyötä. Yhdistys voi antaa lausuntoja erilaisissa tähtitiedettä koskevissa asioissa ja tiedottaa alaan liittyvistä asioista.

Seuran toiminnan tunnetuin puoli ovat Tähtitieteilijäpäivät, jotka järjestetään nykyään monipäiväisenä joka toinen vuosi (ks. esimerkiksi vuoden 2022 Tähtitieteilijäpäivät). Muina vuosina seuran vuosikokous pidetään yleensä FinCOSPAR-kokouksen yhteydessä.

The main operating principle of the Finnish Astronomical Society (FAS) is the advancement of astronomical research in Finland. The teaching and research of astronomy is focused on the connection between the universities of Helsinki, Oulu and Turku and astronomical research institutes, such as the Tuorla Observatory (University of Turku) and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory (Aalto University). The society was founded in 1969 and has about a hundred researchers and students in its field.

The FAS organises scientific meetings and negotiations. It acts as a liaison between the Finnish and international astronomical societies and organisations; for example, it organises Finland's national membership in the Astronomy & Astrophysics journal. Contacts are also maintained with representatives of the Finnish government and other entities (e.g., the Academy of Finland), which fund or otherwise influence Finnish astronomy research. The FAS may make statements on matters relating to astronomy and provide information on matters relating to the field.

The best-known aspect of the FAS’s activities are the Astronomers Days, a multi-day event held every other year (e.g., Astronomers Days 2022). In other years, the society's annual meeting is usually held during the FinCOSPAR meeting.
